On this day in Saints history-October 15th October 15th 1967—Saints lose at the Cotton Bowl to Dallas 14-10 in rain-soaked conditions. Dallas RB Dan Reeves fumbles with under a minute to go, recovered by Saints LB Ted Davis. Saints drove to the Dallas 6-yard line when QB Billy Kilmer fumbled with under a minute to go. Saints defense gets four sacks. Saints complete 20 passes, CB Dave Whitsell has a 26-yard INT return for TD (had 2 INTs). Saints penalized 100 yards. Dallas defense has six sacks. Each team has three turnovers. 1972—Saints lose in Tulane Stadium to the Falcons 21-14, Saints CB Ernie Jackson has a 85-yard TD fumble return (QB Archie Manning had a TD run). Falcons scored 21 unanswered points, the winning points on a 23 yard TD pass from Bob Berry to WR Ken Burrow, TE Jim Mitchell has 2 TDs. Falcons lost five fumbles, Saints three (2 lost by RB Joel Williams). Saints held to 20 passing yards. Falcons defense has 3 sacks, Saints two. Saints LB Joe Federspiel has 11 tackles, DT Bob Pollard 9. 1976—Saints QB Archie Manning is placed on injured reserve after pain in his throwing shoulder wouldn’t completely go away after having surgery following the 1975 season, he would have a second operation not long after going on IR. Manning didn’t play at all in the ’76 regular season. 1978—Saints win at San Francisco 14-7 thanks largely to the running game (55 carries for 175 yards). Saints bring in a new kicker in Tom Jurich, who was cut after the game. RB Mike Strachan & WR Ike Harris score Saints TDs. 49ers turn the ball over six times (four lost fumbles, two INTs). Saints only threw four passes. Saints defense has four sacks (DE Elois Grooms-1.5). Saints LB Joe Federspiel has 6 solo tackles, 5 assists, a forced fumble, fumble recovery, & an INT (CB Maurice Spencer has the other INT). 1987—Players association announces the strike is over but not in time to play in the upcoming weekend’s games. 1989—Saints win at home over the Jets 29-14 to end four game losing streak. Saints QB Bobby Hebert throws 3 TD passes, center Steve Korte is injured and doesn’t return to lineup, Joel Hilgenberg replaces him, WR Eric Martin has two TD catches, including one from 54-yards out (131 yards in game). Saints scored a safety when Jets were called with holding in the endzone. Jets score two defensive TDs (CB James Hasty 34-yard INT, safety Eric McMillian 74 yard fumble return). Saints defense has five sacks (LB Rickey Jackson-2), Jets three. 1995—Saints win their first game of the year in a 33-30 win over the Dolphins in the Superdome. Saints LB Richard Harvey has 12 tackles & a sack. Safety Anthony Newman catches a pass on a fake punt for a first down. Miami QB Dan Marino doesn’t play due to injury. Saints TDs scored by RB Mario Bates, WR Michael Haynes (2), WR Quinn Early, and TE Irv Smith. Saints Tyrone Hughes has 102 kickoff return yards. Dolphins held to 28 yards rushing, QB Bernie Kosar has 3 TD passes & a TD run. Miami offense has five turnovers, Saints two. 2000—Saints win over the Panthers 24-6 in the Superdome. Saints defense has eight sacks (DE Darren Howard & LB Keith Mitchell each have two, DE Joe Johnson-1) with DT La’Roi Glover having three and for the second straight week is named NFC Defensive Player of the Week, CB Kevin Mathis has an INT, special teams ace Fred McAfee recovers a Michael Bates fumble on opening kickoff & in the 4th quarter he runs a fake punt 40 yards to the Carolina 25-yard line, RB Ricky Williams has 144 yards & 2 TDs, WR Joe Horn has 1 TD catch. Panthers offense held to eight first downs & 10 rushing yards. 2006—Saints win over Philadelphia in the Superdome 27-24 thanks to the Saints keeping the ball for the last 8:26 of the game resulting in a John Carney 31-yard fieldgoal on the last play. Saints WR Joe Horn has 2 TD catches & 100 yards, WR Marques Colston has a TD catch. Saints defense has an INT (LB Scott Fujita), fumble recovery, and three sacks. Eagles QB Donovan McNabb has 2 TD passes, WR Reggie Brown has 121 receiving yards, their defense has 2 sacks & 2 INTs.
