On this day in Saints history-October 29th 1967—Saints lose in Tulane Stadium 14-10 to Pittsburgh. Game is known for the first extended playing time of future Saints Hall of Fame WR Danny Abramowicz, who had 12 catches for 156 yards. Danny would go on to set an NFL record with 106 consecutive games played with a catch, one reason for Danny being inserted into starting lineup was WR Walter “Flea” Roberts was called up on National Guard duty. Saints have four INTs (CB Dave Whitsell-2). Saints lead 10-0 before the Steelers scored 2 TDs in the fourth quarter to win (5-yard pass from QB Bill Nelsen to WR J.R. Wilburn, RB Don Shy 33 yard rush with 1:52 to go—Shy has 108 rushing yards). RB Jim Taylor has Saints only TD. Each team has two sacks. 1972—Saints win their first game of the year 21-3 in Tulane Stadium over the Eagles. Saints defense gets three sacks (DE Joe Owens, LB Tom Roussel, DE Richard Neal-1/2, DT Bob Pollard-1/2). Saints WR Danny Abramowicz had two TD catches from Archie Manning & Bob Gresham rushed for one. The only Eagles points are scored by ex-Saints kicker Tom Dempsey. Saints defense has 2 INTs. 1978—Saints defeat the New York Giants in the Superdome 28-17, game gives Saints three wins a row (second time in club history). Saints CB Maurice Spencer has two INTs, safety Tom Myers has one INT & 11 tackles. Giants Ernie Jones blocks a punt for a TD (safety Maurice Tyler). Saints TE Henry Childs scores 2 TDs. Giants had 122 penalty yards. Giants defense has four sacks, Saints two. Saints TDs also scored by FB Tony Galbreath & RB Chuck Muncie. WR Rich Mauti has three special teams tackles. 1986—Touchdown Club holds a special banquet in honor of the Saints’ 20th anniversary of becoming an NFL franchise where former WR Danny Abramowicz states about the club’s fan support, “Wait until this town gets a winner. They’ll really go nuts then.” 1989—Saints win at home over the Falcons 20-13. Saints CB Robert Massey has 12 tackles, LB Pat Swilling has three sacks (team has six), & two forced fumbles and was named NFC Defensive Player of the Week. Saints RB Dalton Hilliard had two TDs (including decided one in 4th quarter) plus 97 yards receiving & 93 rushing, Morten Andersen has two fieldgoals. Falcons held to 148 yards offense. 1995—Saints win a defensive battle at the 49ers 11-7. On a bad extra point snap, Saints QB Tom Hodson (holder) rolls out and hits TE Wesley Walls for a two-point conversion (followed Mario Bates TD—Bates has 106 yards). Saints CB Tyrone Hughes named NFC Special Teams Player of the Week, his efforts included a 74-yard punt return to the 49ers five-yard line, LB Winfred Tubbs has 11 tackles, DE Renaldo Turnbull blocks a fieldgoal attempt. 49ers offense had three turnovers. 49ers WR Jerry Rice has 108 yards. 1999—The 12th annual Saints Hall of Fame Luncheon is held with inductees QB Bobby Hebert (1985-92) and WR Eric Martin (1985-93), the Joe Gemelli Fleur-de-lis award is long-time newspaper writer Frank Wilson. Martin elects not to attend the ceremony over past disagreements with the Saints organization, even though the team doesn’t own or operate the Saints Hall of Fame. 2000—Saints win at Arizona 21-10 which included Saints LB Keith Mitchell running back an INT 40 yards for a TD along with seven solo tackles & was named NFC Defensive Player of the Week, DT La’Roi Glover has two sacks and a forced fumble, LB Darrin Smith has 12 tackles, RB Ricky Williams (1 TD) has 92 receiving yards & 54 rushing yards. Cardinals offense had four turnovers. Other Saints TD by TE Lamont Hall. 2002—RB Deuce McAllister is named NFC Offensive Player of the Month. 2006—Saints lose at home to the Ravens 35-22. Ravens QB Steve McNair has 2 TD passes, their defense had 2 sacks & 4 INTs—2 run back for TDs (CB Ronnie Prude & safety Dawan Landry). Ravens RB Jamal Lewis has 109 rushing yards. Saints QB Drew Brees has 383 passing yards, CB Omare Stoutmire has 10 tackles, Saints penalized 10 times for 68 yards. For the sixth time in club history, Saints have two 100-yard receivers in same game—WR Joe Horn 126 with a TD, WR Marques Colston 163 with 2 TD catches.
