On this day in history - August 13: 1415 - King Henry V of England army lands on mouth of Seine River. King Henry, a mighty warrior and skillful leader will eventually die during his war on France from dysentery. 1704 - French & Bavarian forces were routed by a combined British, German & Dutch army at Blenheim, Germany. The English are lead by John Churchill, a forefather to the half-American, half-English Winston Churchill of WWI & WWII fame. 1784 - The Continental Congress met for the final time in Annapolis, Maryland. It moved a few more times, from Philadelphia, PA to New York City and, finally, to its permanent seat of government in Washington, DC. 1918 - Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany summoned his principal political and military leaders to a crown council at Spa, Belgium. The purpose was to assess the status of the German war effort during war. 1919 The previously undefeated racehorse, Man o’ War, was upset -- by Upset -- at Saratoga, NY. This turn of events so upset Man o’ War that the horse never lost a race again. Man o’ War proved to be quite the stud, as well. After wining 1,300 races, he sired 379 foals. The stud fee for Man o’ War was $5,000. 1940 - Germany began bombing airfields and factories in England. This was the start of the "Battle of Britain" , also called "the Blitz" The "Battle of France" lasted less than two full months, and better strategy and communications allowed Germany to counter French advantages. Speaking of the Allies pilots fighting the German air war, Churchill famously said "Never has so much been owed to so few by so many." 1961 - Berlin was divided by a barbed wire fence to halt the flight of refugees from East Germany. Two days later work on the Berlin Wall began.
