On this day in history, September 18, 1947, the Department of the Air Force was put on an equal footing with the Army and the Navy. As a result, the old U.S. Army Air force was transferred from the Department of the Army to the Department of the Air Force and became known as the United States Air Force. During WWII, the American air power had a vital role in the war effort, both in the European and Pacific theaters. By the end of the war, the strategic and tactical importance of aircraft was clear to all, leading to the establishment of the U.S. Air Force in the National Security Act of 1947.
