On this day in music history: December 1, 1984 - Solid by Ashford & Simpson hits #1 on the Billboard R&B singles chart for 3 weeks, also peaking at #12 on the Hot 100 on February 9, 1985. Written and produced by Nickolas Ashford & Valerie Simpson, it is the biggest hit for the husband and wife songwriting and production team. The song is the title track to Ashford & Simpsons twelfth album (and third release on Capitol Records). The hit single version of the song is remixed by Francois Kevorkian and Ron St. Germain, who will add the now signature acapella to the songs intro and outro. An immediate smash on R&B radio, Solid will crossover to top 40 pop radio, something that had eluded the duo during their years recording for Warner Bros. Solid will become Ashford & Simpsons signature song, and will also be parodied on Saturday Night Live when former SNL performer and actress Maya Rudolph performs it as First Lady Michelle Obama (with Fred Armisen as President Obama) re-written as Solid As Barack.
