On this day in music history: January 19, 1991 - Love Will Never Do (Without You) by Janet Jackson hits #1 on the Billboard Top 200 for 1 week, also peaking at #3 on the R&B singles chart on January 12, 1991. Written and produced by James Harris III and Terry Lewis, it is the fourth number one pop single for the youngest member of the Jackson family. Wanting to show another side of her musically and vocally, Jam & Lewis will have Jackson alternate between singing in a much lower register than normal, and her regular higher range throughout the song. For the crowning touch, the producers will have A&M Records co-founder Herb Alpert play trumpet on the record. Released as the seventh single from Janet Jacksons Rhythm Nation 1814 on November 2, 1990, it is another immediate smash. Entering the Hot 100 at #89 on November 17, 1990, it will climb to the top of the chart nine weeks later. When Love Will Never Do (Without You) ascends to the top of the pop chart, Janet will become the first artist in history to pull seven top five singles from one album, and also the only one to have four number one singles from the same album in three different calendar years. The others being Miss You Much (in 1989), Escapade and Black Cat (in 1990). Love Will Never Do (Without You) is certified Gold in the US by the RIAA.
