On this day in music history: January 24, 1972 - Young, Gifted And Black, the eighteenth album by Aretha Franklin is released. Produced by Tom Dowd, Arif Mardin, and Jerry Wexler, it is recorded at Criteria Studios in Miami, FL from August 1970 - February 1971. Following the acclaimed Spirit In The Dark, The Queen Of Soul will continue her prolific run of hits as she begins work on the follow up. The album will take its title from a song written by Nina Simone, and features musicians such as Donny Hathaway, Chuck Rainey, Bernard Purdie, Hubert Laws, Dr. John, Billy Preston, and Cornell Dupree providing musical support. The album marks another transition in Franklins career and will be regarded by many as one of her best. It will spin off the singles Rock Steady (#2 R&B, #9 Pop) and Day Dreaming (#1 R&B, #5 Pop). Young, Gifted And Black will peak at number two on the Billboard R&B album chart, number eleven on the Top 200, and is certified Gold in the US by the RIAA.
