On this day in music history: January 25, 1975 - Please Mr. Postman by The Carpenters hits #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for 1 week. Written by Georgia Dobbins, Brian Holland, Freddie Gorman, William Garrett, and Robert Bateman, it is the third chart topper for the brother and sister duo from Downey, CA. Following a successive string of hit albums, singles and tours over a period of four years, The Carpenters will take a much needed break. The duo takes much of 1974 off before returning to the studio. Having recorded a medley of oldies for their 1973 album Now And Then, Richard and Karen will decide to record a cover version of the Motown classic Please Mr. Postman, originally recorded by The Marvelettes in 1961 and is the first number one pop single for the Detroit based record label. The Carpenters record their version at A&M Studios in Hollywood in the Fall of 1974 with Karen on vocals and drums, Richard on keyboards and background vocals, Joe Osborn (bass), Tony Peluso (guitar), Bob Messenger (tenor saxophone), and Doug Strawn (baritone saxophone). Postman is released seven months ahead of The Carpenters sixth studio album Horizon on November 9, 1974, and is an immediate smash. The original US release of the single will come packaged in a picture sleeve designed to look like an international air mail envelope. Entering the Hot 100 at #77 on November 23, 1974, it will climb to the top of the chart nine weeks later. The brother and sister duos version of Please Mr. Postman will be only the third song of the rock era to top the charts by two different artists (after Donny Osmonds cover of Go Away Little Girl and Grand Funk Railroads cover of The Loco-Motion). Please Mr. Postman is certified Gold in the US by the RIAA.
