On this day in music history: January 25, 2000 - Voodoo, the second album by DAngelo is released. Produced by DAngelo, DJ Premier, Russell Elevado, J. Dilla, Questlove, and Raphael Saadiq, it is recorded at Electric Lady Studios in New York City from Early 1998 - Late 1999. After Richmond, VA born R&B singer and musicians acclaimed debut album in 1995, he will virtually drop from public view for nearly five years (with the exception of a few soundtrack appearances and a duet on Lauryn Hills solo debut). He will quietly re-enter the studio in 1998, helming much of the production himself, and also collaborating with a number of top R&B and hip hop producers. The heavily anticipated album will be enthusiastically received upon its release aided by the first single and video for Untitled (How Does It Feel). Voodoo will debut at #1 on both the Billboard R&B album chart and the Top 200, winning two Grammy Awards including Best Male R&B Vocal Performance and Best R&B Album. The album will be regarded as a classic of the Neo-soul genre. DAngelo will take nearly fifteen years to follow up Voodoo, hampered by numerous delays due to issues with record labels, and various personal and legal issues. The album titled Black Messiah on Sony Musics RCA label, is finally released on December 15, 2014 to great reviews and solid sales. Voodoo is certified Platinum in the US by the RIAA.
