On this day in music history: January 26, 1985 - Gotta Get You Home Tonight by Eugene Wilde hits #1 on the Billboard R&B singles chart for 1 week, also peaking at #83 on the Hot 100 on February 2, 1985. Written by Ronald Broomfield and McKinley Horton, it is the first chart topping single for the R&B vocalist born Ronald Broomfield in Miami, FL. Wilde and Horton will write the song while on a trip to England collaborating on material for Wildes debut album on Philly World Records (distributed by Atlantic). Issued as the second single from his self-titled debut, R&B radios reaction to Gotta Get You Home Tonight will be positive and swift. The song will also crack the top 20 on the UK singles chart, peaking at #18. Wilde will score one more number one single on the R&B chart with Dont Say No Tonight eleven months later in December of 1985, then scoring a few lesser hits when he moves from Philly World to MCA Records in 1986. In 1996, rapper Foxy Brown will sample Tonight for her solo debut single Get Me Home (featuring BlackStreet) peaking at #10 on the R&B and #42 on the Hot 100 Airplay charts.
