On this day in music history: July 2, 1984 - "Ice Cream Castle", the third album by The Time is released. Produced and arranged by Prince (aka "The Starr Company"), it is recorded at Sunset Sound in Hollywood, CA, First Avenue in Minneapolis, MN, and The Warehouse in St. Louis Park, MN from March 26, 1983 – January 1984. The third studio album by the Minneapolis based R&B/Funk band features The Time in their newly configured line up. With original members Jimmy Jam, Terry Lewis, and Monte Moir having departed a year earlier, they are replaced by bassist Gerry Hubbard, and keyboardists Paul Petersen and Mark Cardenas. Like the previous two Time albums, it will actually feature Prince playing nearly all of the instruments, with the exception of "The Bird" which is recorded live at First Avenue nightclub. The album will spin off three hit singles including the title track (#11 R&B, #106 Pop), "Jungle Love"(#6 R&B, #20 Pop) and "The Bird"(#33 R&B, #36 Pop), the latter two which are featured in the film "Purple Rain". The album will be released with two slight cover variations with the title graphics being printed in different positions on the front cover. A few months after the album is released, both Morris Day and Jesse Johnson will quit the band for solo careers effectively ending The Time. The band will reunite in 1990 for the album "Pandemonium" featuring the original line up from the first two album (plus Jerome Benton). "Ice Cream Castle" will peak at #2 on the Billboard R&B album chart, #24 on the Top 200, and is certified Gold in the US by the RIAA.
