On this day in music history: November 29, 1986 - You Give Love A Bad Name by Bon Jovi hits #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for 1 week. Written by Jon Bon Jovi, Richie Sambora and Desmond Child, it is the first chart topper for the rock band from Sayreville, New Jersey. The bands previous album 7800° Fahrenheit sells decently, but doesnt spin off any major hits. Looking to improve their commercial standing and move to the next level of success in their career, Jon Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora will collaborate with songwriter Desmond Child after he is recommended to them by Paul Stanley of KISS. Bad Name will be the first song the team writes together, composing it in one day. Issued as the first single from their third album Slippery When Wet in late July of 1986, it will give the band their long awaited breakthrough. Entering the Hot 100 at #93 on September 6, 1986, it will climb to the top of the chart twelve weeks later. The chart topping success of You Give Love A Bad Name will help drive sales of Slippery When Wet past the 12x Platinum mark in the US, selling more than twenty five million copies worldwide.
