On this day in music history: October 12, 1991 - “Emotions” by Mariah Carey hits #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for 3 weeks, also topping the R&B singles chart for 1 week on November 2, 1991, and topping the Club Play chart for 1 week on November 30, 1991. Written by Mariah Carey, David Cole, and Robert Clivilles, it is the fifth pop and third R&B chart topper for the pop music superstar from Huntington, L.I., NY. Following the huge breakthrough success of her self-titled debut album, selling over nine million copies, spinning off four number one pop singles, and winning two Grammy Awards, Mariah Carey will begin making plans for the follow up in early 1991. But before work can begin on it, Carey will part ways with her longtime songwriting partner Ben Margulies when they have a disagreement over songwriting credit and royalties. At the suggestion of Sony Music executive Tommy Mottola, Carey will be paired with songwriter and producers Robert Clivilles and David Cole (aka C+C Music Factory) to work on her sophomore effort. One of the four songs they co-write together is “Emotions”, which will bare more than a passing resemblance to the R&B/Disco classics “Best Of My Love” by The Emotions and “Got To Be Real” by Cheryl Lynn. Issued as the first single and title track from Carey’s second album on August 13, 1991, the song will be an immediate smash. Entering the Hot 100 at #35 on August 31, 1991, it will streak to the top of the chart six weeks later. “Emotions” is certified Gold in the US by the RIAA.
