On this day one century ago the officers, the chiefs, and the bluejackets of the USS TEXAS, Battleship Number 35, heard and heeded the order, “Man this Ship and bring her to life!”, and she became a commissioned warship of the United States Navy. She served her nation for another 34 years, becoming BB35 along the way. She saw two World Wars and steamed seemingly endless seas, and was home to countless Sailors and Marines young and old; she remains home to her Shipmates who have Crossed Over, or who have had to move on. I wanted to be with her on this day; I should have been with her, but circumstances have prevented that from coming to pass. But I will honor her in my own way today, outwardly alone, but grateful for the good company that I know I will have at my side, as I stand by theirs, in spirit. Fair winds, old girl, Lady of Steel.
