On this eve of game 7, I want to say a little something about winning. I realized that one of the main reasons I want Kansas City teams to win a championship is so that other people will be forced to acknowledge where Im from with a little bit of respect. So that people will be forced to think about this flyover city. So that the city & all of us fans by extension will matter - to the nation & to history. How often do we think of the 08 Rays? The 07 Rockies (apart from the recent sweep streak comparisons)? The 98 Padres? Name three players on the 2000 Mets; I cant. In a few years how often will we think about the 10 & 11 Rangers? The teams that lose in the World Series are not fondly remembered by time & I very desperately want this Royals team to be remembered. BUT. WITH THAT SAID. Maybe what matters the most is what we, the Royals fans, remember. Maybe what matters most are the memories & stories that well share with each other, that well share with our children & grandchildren. And whether the Royals win or lose this World Series, no one can ever take from us the memories of this team. No one can ever take away how much this postseason meant to all of us. I cant lie here. 2nd place is my least favorite thing, for reasons that arent entirely related to sports. I cant pretend that a loss wont leave me utterly crushed, perhaps in a deeper way than Ive ever been before. But maybe I recover sooner than I think. Maybe my ability to sit down with any one of yall & talk about those 7 stolen bases in the Wild Card game is enough. Maybe these permanent memories are enough. With that perspective, whatever happens tonight is all gravy. Bonus. Extra. Weve already won something. Weve already added an AL pennant that will fly forever. And maybe I can convince myself here that at this point the Royals actually have nothing to lose.
