On this first full day of winter, a complex weather pattern is setting up in the continental U.S. A low pressure center will first bring some snow tonight into Tuesday for the northern Plains. An upper-level trough will then continue to amplify in the center of the country where a new low is forecast to form rapidly in the Deep South Tuesday night. The storm will then turn northward and move rapidly northward across the Ohio Valley towards the Great Lakes on Christmas Eve, spreading rain across much of the eastern U.S. The rain could be heavy at times on Christmas Eve along with embedded thunderstorms, especially the South! A strong cold front will then sweep across the eastern U.S. in the evening and into early morning on Christmas Day before bring the rain to an end. Following the heel of this storm, a low coming from the Pacific will combine with colder air from the north to bring snow across the northern half of the Rockies spreading into the northern Plains from Christmas into the weekend!
