On this night 50 years ago, October 4th, 1964, the CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Corporation) premieres/debuts an hour long news magazine program inspired by the BBC-TV and NBC-TV satire series, That Was The Week That Was that had not lasted very long (but would inspire another satire series later in the decade and contribute to yet another one, that would debut in 1975, that has lasted to this day) gone off the air back in the spring of 1964. This Hour Has Seven Days was created by Patrick Watson and Douglas Leiterman and brought to the audience live from Toronto as an avenue for a more stimulating and more boundary pushing brand of journalism. Obviously also inspired by earlier, not as long as time limit shows by journalist such as Edward R. Murrow, This Hour Has Seven Days would last for two seasons until May 8th, 1966, but more importantly it would inspire future attempts at this type of news magazine reporting such as ABC-TVs 20/20, PBS-TVs The MaNeil/Lehrer Newshour and of course CBS-TVs 60 Minutes. Below the image of the title card for this Canadian news magazine television series, celebrating its 50th anniversary of premiere/debut is the very first episode of the series:
