Once, I got busted at Crit group for writing He wanted to get ahold of her. (or some other construction that used ahold.) I took it out. However...I know that is how I say it, and while I suspect it is a regionalism like spendy it was a hard sell to convince me it was bad writing. Reading local news online this morning I came across this sentence: The best data we could get ahold of... Its nice to see that Im not the only writer in the area who uses dialect That said...(Im just pondering, really) when reading something set in a particular region do you like a little dialect? Too much dialect dries me nuts, but a little bit transports me. In theory, I would want a character to feel free to say she has to get ahold of her mom to borrow money for the spendy boots, because thats how shed talk here in Portland....
