Once Upon a time , The whole Kashmir was a totally peaceful state or kingdom . The great Buddha praised himself about Kashmir as a very suitable place for leading a spiritual life and practice because of its quite peaceful natural beauties as well as healthy weather . After 218 years of Mahaparinibbana of the Buddha , The Ashoka (273-232 B.C.) was the mighty Buddhist emperor of the whole Jambu Dip ( present India, Pakistan, Afghanistan so on ) . He was a great tolerant of other views or other religions . Later he knew that His great Teacher ( Buddha ) praised himself about beautiful Kashmir as a best and ideal place for Spiritual practice 218 years ago . He took 5000 Buddhist monks with him to Kashmir and built numerous Temples , monasteries and Stupas to establish peace . Soon, Peace and happiness spread all over the Jammu & Kashmir due to influential teachings ( as Non-violence , loving -kindness and compassion ) of the Buddha . It lasted as a most peaceful state for many hundred years until the Muslim Mughol Kings Invaded the Kashmir . The Muslim Mughol kings were totally intolerant of other views , Thats why , Numerous temples , Monasteries and Stupas were destroyed by them . Some beautiful monasteries were converted to Mosque ( present Nashband Salib mosque ) and Palace like Puri Mahal Garden ( still exist ) in Kashmir by force ........n Note : At the present moment , its a very tough matter to find out a single local buddhist in Srinagar except Led ladakh .
