Once, a man found Mulla Nasruddin searching for something on the - TopicsExpress

Once, a man found Mulla Nasruddin searching for something on the ground outside his house. On being asked, Nasruddin replied that he was looking for his key. The man also joined in the search and in due course asked Mulla: Where exactly did you drop it? Mulla answered: In my house. Then why are you looking here? the man asked. There is more light here than in my house, replied Mulla. Message This is one of the famous stories of Mulla to illustrate the futility of searching something “Outside” that lies “Inside”. In the context of Sufism, it explains that futility of searching God outside by rituals. We look outside for God because there is darkness inside our heart. However, the need is to remove the darkness inside where He dwells by “enlightenment” rather than searching Him outside where He does not exist at all. We may laugh at the foolishness of Mulla but are we not searching God in temples, rituals and Scriptures rather than seeking Him in our heart? Kabir, one of the great Sufi saints of India, too expressed the same thought in following words Original (Hindi) Moko kahan dunde re bande, Main to tere pas mein Na tirath mein na murat mein, Na kanth nivas mein Na mandir mein na masjid mein Na kabe kailas mein Main to tere pas mein bande Main to tere pas mein English Translation Where are you searching ME by son, I am always with you? Not in the pilgrimage, not in the idols, not in prayer either. Not in temple, not in mosque, not in Kaba, Not in Kailash (Holy Mountain) I am always with you my son, I am always with you.
