Once again I would like to wish all of my Facebook friends and family a Merry Christmas and a blessed, prosperous New Year! I originally did not intend to make any more postings for the year, but I felt strongly compelled to share this one in light of the racial tensions sweeping across our nation at this time. Regardless of your opinion of the News Media, this is a first-hand account based on pure observation. Im not attempting to read into anyones mind or motive. This is simply what I saw: 4:15 pm, Brooklyn, New York, Albany Ave. between Foster Ave. and Farragut Rd On returning home from a Christmas day visit with my little brother Karl, in Queens, I decided to grab a late coffee from the neighborhood 7-11 store and park at my usual spot by Foster Ave. park across the street from P.S. 198. The school was closed for the holiday and the surrounding 12 ft. high fence closed and locked; however, within its courtyard were 2 grade-school aged black youths shooting a basketball. Suddenly the ball escaped the grip of one of the youngsters, bounced over the fence and landed in the path of an oncoming vehicle which managed to stop short of a speed bump in front of the school and causing a pile-up of vehicles from behind. One of the boys made haste to scale the fence shortly followed by his companion. The passenger from the paused vehicle emerged, and with basketball in hand, waited patiently for the two youths to complete their obstacle. By now the other vehicles decided it was safe to venture around the double-parked squad car. Once the boys landed, they cautiously approached the waiting, smiling police officer. Three minutes of lecturing and exchanged laughs passed before the officer finally returned their prized possession. As the boys wandered off, bouncing their ball I could see their enthusiastic expressions. No doubt they didnt go away hating all cops. Once the police officer returned to his squad car and began to pull off I could not help but to sound my horn and give them a thumbs-up. The last thing I saw was a beaming, appreciative smile from the driver. So whats my message? Simply this: We cant judge an entire race or department based on the actions of a few rotten apples. Rather we need to look within ourselves and then, and only then, may we find the wisdom to judge the actions of an individual heart. First remove the plank from your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye (Matthew 7:5). Not all black youths are criminals; and not all police officers are racist!
