Once again Ive found a whole generation of young folks walking around who missed a true talent, Flip Wilson. Flip was the comedian in between the explosion of Dick Gregory and Bill Cosby,and then Richard Pryor and Eddie Murphy. In fact, in 1972, Time Magazine put Flip on the cover and proclaimed him TVs first Black superstar. Flip had a primetime network variety show then , and his alter ego was almost as popular as he. Flip had created a female character (30 years before Tyler and Madea)named Geraldine who had a hook line that everyone in America was saying. The Devil made me do it. Flip won a Grammy, an Emmy and a Golden Globe. No small achievement for a little Black kid from Jersey City, N.J. whose real name is Clerow. The show is still in re-runs today. Those of you who have some old school soldiers on your holiday list may want to consider two of his classic albums as gifts this year. They are The Devil Made Me Buy This Dress and Cowbys and Colored People. Flip died in 1998 from liver cancer, he was 64.
