Once again, i applaud the decision of president Robert Mugabe , who has indicated that Zimbabwe may halt exports of raw platinum to South Afrika to force mining companies to build a refinery in the country as a two-year deadline has expired. The halting of exports of raw platinum to South Afrika will affect the world’s two largest platinum producers, Anglo American Platinum and Impala Platinum Holdings, both of which have operations in Zimbabwe. Zimbabwe has the world’s second largest known platinum reserves but mining companies send the raw product to neighbouring South Africa for processing, and return them back into Zimbabwe, selling them at exhorbitant prices. However, if these mining companies were to develop the infrastructure needed to ensure the refining of the raw platinum in Zimbabwe, employment would be created and Zimbabwe would not have to pay import taxes for their own resources. Zimbabwe continues to be an example to all Afrikan leaders, of what it means to not bow down to dictates of Western imperialism. From president Robert Mugabe, Afrika continues to learn what decisive leadership and commitment to genuine independence as envisioned by founding fathers of the OAU in 1963 means.
