Once again the kitchen window-on-the-world has been very entertaining. No sooner had I arrived down to make breakfast when a large squirrel with a luscious black coat and very bushy tail posed on the newel post of our back yard steps. He held his magnificent tail in a beautiful reversed "S" curve as he nibbled delicately on a nut. I was really entranced. Then we noted a large hawk perched in the black cherry tree right by the hanging flower pot that Maija had bought me. He was so big that it was hard to believe he was really there. He poked a bit at the flowers and then moved up a branch or two. A second later a bright flash of blue heralded the flight of a blue jay swooping very quickly through our yard. Instantly the hawk was after him and another hawk from some where else tried to intercept him too. Meanwhile, the black squirrel decided to take off as the flights of these birds were very low, just over his head. All this happened in less than a minute! I was totally awake by now and turned with dazed eyes to stagger over to the stove to make breakfast!
