Once again the question of the useful life of digital archives - TopicsExpress

Once again the question of the useful life of digital archives comes up. Several people have written about hardware lifespan, my issue is file formats. 10% of my files are Wordperfect format. The text files are accessible, the graphics & spreadsheets are less so. 15% of my files are Micrografx format. I havent tried re-installing my Micrografx software but nothing else seems to have import filters. 50% of my bosss files are Lotus 123 format, a form which they discontinued after 123r5 and which requires us to keep a virtual 32 bit machine running a 95 emulator on his computer. 25% of my files are Staroffice format, a file form that Openoffice discontinued support for after OOv3.4 requiring me to keep an old copy on a spare machine and gradually upgrade file formats. All this over a 15 year span of technology. Not that long a career but 3 lifetimes in the tech world.
