Once again this morning, CNBCs Joe Kernan took an opportunity to bash liberals during the readout of a charity giving study. He inferred that because red states tended to give the most, that liberals were less charitable. And he totally skipped over the stat that the wealthy gave less as a percent of income (no trickle down?). First, the report was by state and income levels, not by politics, and he inferred his observation because red states gave the most. Well if you live or travel through the south, its not surprising - the second most frequent buildings after gas stations are churches. The largest segment receiving donations are churches (over 30%). Churches are non-profits, not charity organizations - and no one at the desk asked what percent of those donations go to the needy? Of course many individual churches do a lot of good work, however its easy to see from the massive buildings, local Sunday TV evangelists etc. where a lot of those donations also flow to. I personally give only to specific charities that have a record of low overhead and a high percentage flowing to the cause. Why Im more centralist than their definition of liberal, I am so tired of the right wing talking points and implied use of the label. Liberals throughout our history are responsible for every program that has helped lesson poverty while improving the quality of life. The recent series on The Roosevelts was eye opening on how severe the battle was to enable those programs; from food safety, child labor law, civil rights, womens rights, and social security ... Not charity, but definitely a helping hand.
