Once again you can thank Otto von Stroheim..... for ‘the Original Beach’Nik....’ Post SwinginTikis, I all but retired ‘CrazyAL’ on my 30th birthday, reserving it only for my new Co. ‘CrazyAL’s Bone Productions.’ However, my Art School chum Eric Rindal decided to form the band ‘APE’ a year later... Otto’s Tiki News was really taking off, and a new thing called internet ‘chat-room’ names came into being..... CrazyAL was here to stay. So, as to Beach-Nik, Otto, and the like? As front man to a band playing music exclusively in the American genres of 1920-1960’s, I knew my old stand by long-haired Tarzan Jungle-boy, Spicoli look, wasn’t going to cut it. No Way, not with this new whack-a-doodle Retro-Otto crowd/audience. (As well as the new look being true to the music.) For all the first APE gigs I appeared in a Robinson Crusoe/Pre-Mid-century castaway ‘out-fit’. This prompted Otto’s description in Tiki News #17. “...Embodying (and) inheriting the...empty throne of ‘Beachcomber’...” Since a kid, I’d idolized the Blues Brothers characters and subsequent movie and dreamed to head a band. Dark sunglasses where a must and fed perfectly into the pre 60s Men-In-Black SiFi & Beatnik vibe that artists like Von Lowbrow Franco and the El Pizzo where already ‘re-establishing’ in the iconography of the last 15 years. Beach-Nik, Learn-it, Know-it , Live-it.....
