Once modern science got started, it developed VERY fast! It is amazing to think that the very FIRST permanent photographs were taken in the year 1839 -- and by 1898, less than 60 years later, commercial movie theaters, known as Nickelodeons, were a thriving industry! On February 1, 1839, William Henry Fox Talbot visited John Herschel and his wife at their home near London, bringing with him specimens of his new method for capturing images produced in a closed box with a lens on paper chemically treated with silver chloride. The problem, Talbot complained to the Herschels, was that with time and exposure to light, the images would vanish. Let me see if I can fix this! said John Herschel. After a while he returned, and explained that he had treated the photographs with a solution of hyposulphite of soda, which dissolved the unexposed silver chloride, thus making the first permanent photographs. --Laura J.
