Once one of the most informative and respected newspapers in Venezuela, El Universal - under new ownership (widely rumored to be the government, via a ghost consortium in Spain) and the direction of Jose Antonio Abreus brother, Jesús Abreu Anselmi - has steadily lost its best journalists, who refuse to accept the new editorial line. Some have resigned, others have been fired. Among the latter, the great cartoonist RAYMA, fired for publishing a now famous representation of Venezuelas moribund health system, as well as a less than flattering satirization of Gustavo Dudamel after the deadly student protests of last February. It seems that the world is losing its appetite for the stifling of the free press, and freedom of expression. The light is beginning to shine in the darkness. Thank you, Norman Lebrecht.
