Once the arctic air starts to slide across Lakes Erie and Ontario...The conditions and setup look to support a major lake snow event. lasting from later tonight into Saturday. Off of Lake Erie: During the overnight a band will set up north of the Metro Buffalo area...Niagara, Orleans, Genesee, and into northern Erie Counties. The band will intensify and then move into the Buffalo Metro, bringing heavy snow and whiteout conditions..3-5 inches per hour snow rates are very possible. The band will shift south of Buffalo and into the Southern Tier and weaken a bit during the afternoon. It could osculate a bit north and south.. Snow will most likely make it into the the southern Finger Lakes and northwest Pennsylvania.... Then the band looks to swing back north. The band will drop 12-18 inches with amounts of 3 feet quite possible under the most intense part of the band. The Thruway from Exits 46-61 has a ban on all tractor trailers until further notice. The ban also applies to I-190 in both direction, South of Exit 16. Off of Lake Ontario: The setup is very impressive. We will see a impressive band setup north of Watertown....then slide south into Watertown in time for the morning commute. The band will then shift south later in the morning into Friday afternoon, into southern Jefferson, northern Lewis, and northern Oswego Counties and intensify further. Snow rates of 3-6+ inches per hour are quite possible during this time. Snowfall amounts will be on the order of 1-3 feet with possibly 4-5 feet under the most intense part of the band.... The band will make into the western Adirondacks...into Herkimer and very likely Hamilton counties. Places like Old Forge could see 8-12 inches...the band will weaken late Saturday afternoon/evening. Winds off of Erie and Ontario will be very gusty with some gust reaching 45-50 mph....so whiteouts and low visibility can be expected..... travel will be next to impossible and dangerous inside the lake effect snow bands..... I would expect New York State to close portions of Route 81 during this time. Heres a look at radar and a chart showing where the lake snow Warnings and Advisories are. Outside the lake effect bands nothing to only a few inches are expected.
