... Once upon a time, I dont think I would have ever imagined 30 and 40-somethings would be all that fascinated with Disney, fantasy stories, Doctor Who, and the like. When my father was my age, he had five children, a boat, a steady job with a company car, and I dont think I ever saw him do much more than watch an occasional football game. The nerdiest thing I knew about him was that he had read Frank Herberts Dune, and had a copy of an illustrated version of the book (I still have it, though its fallen into a considerable state of disrepair over the years). Most friends my age are complete geeks, even the ones who have kids. I have a friend from high-school who is proudly showing pictures of his Bobba Fett costume that hes been working on for months now. Another friend posts updates on strange movies and books he reads. I get everything from Lord of the Rings to Firefly to Star Trek comments on a near daily basis. And me? I play video games, read comics and still geek out over cartoons... though not as often as I once did. I have to wonder, and I pose the question to everyone else in my feed: Were our parents just interested in other things or are we living in an age where its perfectly acceptable to celebrate childish things? I know women who are my age that still like Tinkerbell. Maybe growing up is just an illusion... or maybe were living in an age where we can hold on to our childhood just a little longer thanks to social media and electronic community.
