Once upon a time, mom and I had Movie Night. One evening a month, wed put away life for a little while and go see two movies, the first film would be her choice and my choice would finish the evening. The only rule was the films had to be ones off the beaten path, nothing that the masses would intrude upon. Turns out we both shared an intense passion for small crowds at the theater. Today, I was happily reminded of one of our favorite movies, the 1996 release The Big Night, with a cast that, at the time, may not have seemed extraordinary, which is what makes the film all the more appealing. Starring Marc Anthony, Tony Shalhoub, Stanley Tucci, the film follows the tale of a failing Italian restaurant run by two brothers who gamble on one special night to try to save the business. The film also features performances from Isabella Rossellini, Minnie Driver, Liev shreiber, Ian Holm and Allison Janney. I stopped watching college football to follow this gem once again. Made me a bit melancholy for Movie Night, but it also made me smile.
