One Minute Message 10/29/13 Devotional Thought: Preparations had been made for Jesus to celebrate the Passover Meal with his disciples. Passover commemorated Israel’s exodus from Egypt and deliverance from slavery. The Passover meal was designed to remember back to the Exodus as well as look forward to the coming of the Messiah. As Jesus brought the disciples to an appreciation of their past he instituted a new meal of commemoration presenting him as both the sacrificial Lamb of God that “takes away the sin of the world” and the Messiah who gives victory over death. Devotional Text: Matthew 26:26-28 (NIV) 26 While they were eating, Jesus took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, Take and eat; this is my body. 27 Then he took the cup, gave thanks and offered it to them, saying, Drink from it, all of you. 28 This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.
