One More Chance My little boy came home from school Hey mom, look what Ive done! Too much involved with supper I, Said, Wait till later, hon. I knew he felt rejected now, But I promised myself then, Id make it up to him when I, Had time, I knew not when. With supper dishes put away , I sat down by his side, And with my arm around my son, I felt a sense of pride. Before he got to tell his tale, I heard the doorbell ring, An old friend dropped in for a call, Just an ordinary thing. Forgetting all about my son, I soon lost track of time, My little boy went off to bed, Without his nursery rhyme. My friend went home so I went up, To tuck my boy in tight, I noticed there, beside his bed, When I turned on the light, Inside his trash can, hed torn up, What hed brought home from school, And as I pieced it back again, I sure felt like a fool. There was a picture that hed drawn , I guessed it was of me, With a little boy beside a dog, A flower, and a tree. And underneath , the words he wrote, In kindergarten blue, Inside a heart of crimson red, Were Mom, I sure love you. I felt a lump inside my throat, And kissed his sleeping head, I held him close and knelt beside, His tiny wooden bed. Oh Lord, Please give me one more chance, Undeserving as I am. Please turn the clock back just one day, And let me hear again, Hey Mom, look what Ive done! by Bonnie McGill
