One More Once, JOE LOVANO LANDMARKS Blue Note. Ive related about this recording before but I must do so again because its one of my favorite records and for the good reason that Im a Devout Coltrane lover and in my opinion, Joe Lovano is one of the few Sax players today whose approach to the music can be said to be well informed by that of Trane in the best sense, by which I mean that while he too has the prodigious technical command of the instrument as Trane had likewise, like Trane also he does not use it to Showboat such Chops but instead only to play what he can Hear and to express his Heart and Soul. Or to make this even clearer yet, there are lots of Jazz Sax players who emulate or copy Tranes sound but thats not the way to go at all, in Jazz as in all Serious ART full caps the idea is to seek influence from those Giants whose music, Art, you Love, but producing a sound that is Uniquely your OWN. Joe Lovano is one Saxophonist who understands this, yes he Loved Trane like all the others but to his credit he never thought to copy him. And as Ive also related about Joe, he just does His Thing with no concern whatsoever as to what anyone else is doing, as related about him participating in some multi Saxophone performances Ive attended, while the others were into a Cutting Contest, when it was Joes turn he again just laid down that Warm Fat Beautifully Soulful thing he does which is why so many Jazz fans really Love his music and have made him one of the more successful Artists on the scene. ANYONE can Love Joe Lovanos music, from the most well educated long term Jazz lover to your Momma or your Poppa. This CD was I believe the first Joe did for Blue Note and so he and the Band that includes John Abercrombie who is another long term Fave of mine on the Guitar, Ken Werner Piano, Marc Johnson Bass, and Bill Stewart Drums, are really playing at their utmost Best happy as they were we can assume to have this opportunity. And Oh Yes, John Scofield co produced the record with Joe which obviously helped make the music as great as it is. Every tune is a masterpiece in my well educated opinion but again there are Two tunes that have always captured my own Heart and Soul, the one being Emperor Jones dedicated to the dude I refer to as LORD Elvin Jones, my Main Man on Drums, and the other tune in somewhat the same musical mode is I Love Music written by Emil Boyd, a good friend of Joes dad who was also a Jazz Sax player of note known as Big T Lovano, one of the leading Sax players in Cleveland back when. But having struck up a friendship with Joe, I can well appreciate WHY his music is so wonderful as it is, namely because Joe got to be one of the most beautiful folks Ive ever met and known in my experience of the music, I met him one day at Drummers World and he seemed to know me in relation to Sam Rivers and when I connected with him online he was so supportive to me, I confided some Blues and Dues I was going through and Joe replies, Im going to send you some music to cheer you up and he did too and on more than one occasion as well. Joe Lovano like John Coltrane is a Beautiful Dude and thats Why his music also like that of Trane is as Beautiful as it IS!
