One Night Only March 8th! DALLAS: In partnership with the Latino Cultural Center, Amalia Ortiz presents Carmen de la Calle: A New Latino Musical. This theatrical adaptation of Georges Bizet’s classic opera takes place at the Latino Cultural Center on Saturday, March 8, 2014 with two performances, at 12:00 noon as part of the Target Second Saturday family activities, and an evening performance at 7:30 p.m. Please contact the Latino Cultural Center at 214.671.0045 for ticket information. Following a hugely successful 2012 San Antonio debut, Amalia Ortiz’s Carmen de la Calle brings its South Texas flavor to compadres in North Texas. This new Latino musical written by nationally-recognized and award-winning poet and performer, Amalia Ortiz (Russell Simmons Presents Def Poetry HBO, the prestigious Hedgebrook writers residency program, 2011 IC3 Residency at the National Hispanic Cultural Center) is directed by Joel C. Settles. Carmen de la Calle will feature a diversity of Texas music including Tex-Mex Conjunto, Hip-Hop, Country music, adaptations of traditional Mexican standards and even Punk Rock! Set in 1989 San Antonio and the present, this adaptation of Bizet’s opera delves into themes of passion and envy while portraying the lives and struggles of the marginalized working class of South Texas. Carmen de la Calle highlights the hybrid of Tex-Mex culture by incorporating melodramatic novelas (Mexican soap operas), spoken word, bilingualism and pop culture. The story begins in present day with Mercedes behind her bar. After witnessing a scuffle between a young patron and her boyfriend, Mercedes is reminded of the tragic story of her friend, Carmen. With the musical help of a local DJ and the house band, Mercedes guides the audience through a flashback of her youth in San Antonio. Audiences will be swept up in the lives of Carmen, a gorgeous and tenacious femme fatale factory worker and Queen of the Theo Avenue Gs, her lover Joe, a straight laced all-American military police officer who grew up in the Valley, and neighborhood homies like Frasquita, a female emcee with big hair, big earrings and big attitude, and Don Cairo, Carmen’s macho equal, an aspiring rapper, and leader of the Theo Avenue Gs. Carmen aims to deliver all the drama, humor, music, and passion that audiences fell in love with during its debut run. You won’t want to miss this special one night engagement.
