One Page Wonder 175 (End) Sometimes we stare so long at a door - TopicsExpress

One Page Wonder 175 (End) Sometimes we stare so long at a door that is closing that we see too late the one that is open.--- Alexander Graham Bell It is said quite often that all good things must come to an end sometime. As a new year dawns it appears as though something that I have done for such a long time will also meet that completion. It may sound egotistical, or understated as only those that know me really well will be able to judge but I have often felt that there have been only two things that I have been comfortably efficient at. Those two were soccer goalkeeping and being a DJ, both situations where I always felt completely at home. Here is the sticking point because I gave up one to do the other and now that is nearing an end, what will I do next. Our plan is to close down NightSound at the end of 2015 so 25 years of late nights will be no more. It is difficult to count the number of functions though I would guess it would be over 1200 as we have played at over 400 Weddings. I played one night where there were 9 different couples, all together, whose weddings I had done. Imagine that. If only I had a gig where I just turned up and played with no setting up but that is the lot of a mobile DJ. We started NightSound in 1990 from humble beginnings, with basic equipment and terrible lighting effects with the goal of being able to provide enough extra income so that when we had children, Wendy would only need to work casually. From there it grew and grew as word spread and bookings increased in frequency. As that grew so did the equipment until we had so much we needed a bigger van. Its funny how that happens because you get so excited you dont realising you are expanding. In the process, I had to retire from the other thing I did well, playing soccer. We deemed it was a tricky situation having a booking in place with the chance that I may get injured that day and not be able to attend. That was not professional and our family aim was more important so that decision took its natural course. Over the last 25 years Ive had heaps of fun at so many functions, entertaining and being entertained in the process. It has come at a cost though as late nights are more than that as you have to set up and pack up so it destroys your weekends, though the earnings have provided us with things we may not have been able to afford otherwise. So many great family holidays have been funded by NightSound. During that journey I have played at every single function and even though at times we could have had extra units, it was important to have complete control over what our brand delivered. I know what, when and how to play particular tunes to make memorable nights, and sure there are nights where few dance but sometimes that is how people are. I know in my heart that each night that I have done my best. With the upside there are always downsides and the constant weekends gone, particularly during spring and summer limit what we can do. Many events missed because we already had bookings on the dates as I always honoured the fact that if I had a booking I couldnt change it should something else come up. Very few Saturday night family barbeques because I was always out helping someone else have a good time. Its been fun but the time is up so I have no idea what my next thing is because I dont know what else I am good at. Maybe something will turn up in the near future. At this time I plan to end One Page Wonders at 199 so challenging times indeed. What have you been really good at that had to come to an end ? What did you replace it with and how did that work for you? As our lives move with the ever changing world we must remember that nothing stays the same forever. However, it is important that no matter what we do, know that youve given it your best. Have a great week Rodney Tattam 4th January 2015
