One Page Wonders 103 (Doctors) As you get older you tend to think differently than you did when you were younger. Your focus heads in different directions, with changing responsibilities and things that revolve around our health and well being. I started to think on what type of an impact on your life your Doctor has, and how important it is to have one you can trust implicitly. My Doctor has a motto that she is proud to share. It goes like this “I need to respect and honour this privilege that my patients bestow on me in choosing me to be their Doctor”. During my time, my many travels I have had many Doctors, however I have no doubt that the one I have now is the best ever, and isn’t that how it should be? You have the certainty of knowing that should you require it, help is only an appointment away. It makes sense and you want those around you to have the opportunity to experience good health as well. My Doctor knows all about me and all of my family, genuinely cares, has unbelievable knowledge and is always doing more education to improve her knowledge in order to give her patients the very best updated care. In this world you get what you pay for, if you want good care you pay for it. If you want to save money that’s up to you but gambling on your health isn’t the best choice. There are many bulk bill clinics which are fantastic if that is what you want, but in that situation where you are only a number. Quick appointments with little, if any knowledge of your history and, more importantly no connection. You are a commodity, that is all and in my opinion I have no desire for me or my family to be commodities because I believe we count and we choose value. My doctor gives us that value in spades and for that I have no qualm about payment because I trust that she cares about us. Going to a bulk bill doctor because you don’t have to pay is equivalent to buying cheap tyres for your car rather than ones which will keep your family safe. Would you risk that? I doubt it! So take the price out of the equation because as far as I know when you are dead, you are dead. The money you’ve saved by being bulk billed won’t be any good to you then. You sit in a waiting room and the Doctor is running late and you can feel the agitation of some patients and I look with amusement. They aren’t late by choice and I know if mine is late she is giving extra time, better value to those in front of me. You can decide to be annoyed or chill out and enjoy the break and take the time to relax from your busy life. You’d hate to be rushed through in order for the doctor to pick up time so what’s the big deal? Wait your turn. Maybe because our Doctor came from an impoverished country, struggled to get an education and suffered several debilitating illnesses when younger, could be the reason that she finds joy in being able to make a difference in her patient’s lives, and she really does! You go to her practice and you know she cares about her patients, and her team because the vibe is fabulous and her laugh infectious. I remember well my time as a hairdresser, along with my DJ business on how important it is to be there for your clients. To care and give them value is vital, because in life connection is so important and develops trust, and that counts. In far too many businesses nowadays, it is all about the money, and not about the people. It should always be about the people, your clients and your team because people will always pay for the experience. Money is the end result of doing something, do it well and you make more money and if your team are happy, your clients will feed off that energy and come back. Let’s get one thing straight, your health shouldn’t be viewed as a transaction. So ask yourself, does your Doctor, or your Doctor’s, give you what you need and do you trust what they tell you, and if so is their charge relevant? If not, time for a change before it’s too late. When I asked her why she is opening a new practice in the Northern Suburbs of Hobart, as well as her Sandy Bay one, her response was simply “so I can make a difference in more people’s lives”. . Isn’t that a Doctor you’d love to have? We feel so lucky. Have a great week Rodney Tattam 21st July 2013 moonahdoctors.au/default.html surgeryqueenstreet/
