One Problem That Linux Has, But Windows Mac Users Dont Face - TopicsExpress

One Problem That Linux Has, But Windows Mac Users Dont Face It Linux distributions dont support USB audio box efficiently. It is painful to record high quality audios on Linux machines. Every desktop OS has ups and downs. The case is not different with popular open source operating system- Linux. Besides all awesome features that Linux comes with, the lack of support for hardware is the only part that sucks. It is very disappointing to see number of hardware, accessories and softwares are still not supported by Linux Linux lovers overcome this big issue by compiling patch manually. Linux forums, developer communities are full of such patches, guidelines and tutorials. So, it is not really that tough task to compile the patch and make the hardware work with your Linux desktop. But, there is a huge thing that is still missing in Linux distributions, i.e., hardware support for those people who are into recording high quality audio on computers. There are people who record interviews, podcasts, audio book and even music in some cases on computer. Recording the high quality audio on Linux desktop environment is critical task. Audiophiles generally use microphone to record the audio. External USB audio box does the best job of recording high quality audio on computer. A blogger and avid Linux fan, Bryan Lunduke faced lot of difficulties while using his Steinberg UR-22 USB audio box on Linux. He complied the custom patch for Linux kernel. He found number of tutorials online. There is even Ubuntu bug report with full code and a patch to make Steinberg UR-22 compatible with any Linux distribution. When user custom complies Linux kernel then it creates new update for his OS repository. Updating this kernel would involve re-compiling the kernel again while, ignoring this update would lead to security threat. It’s a painful task, and if user hits update by an accident, hardware stops working. Lunduke was frustrated hence, he decided to replace UR-22 with Focusrite Scarlett 2i2, which supports Linux. It works with almost all Linux distributions. When Lunduke tried multitasking on his workstation, his Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 stopped working all of sudden. It started flashing lights and some annoying error sounds, followed by automatic reset. User can still record the audio on Audacity or Ardour on Linux but the audio box gets reset after some interval of time. It is very painful and not at all efficient way. While, on the other hand, all USB audio box work flawlessly on Windows or Mac.
