One day, Raila arranged to meet Nyachae at the Serena Hotel to sign a Memorandum of Understanding supporting Nyachae’s presidential candidacy. An alliance was to then be announced at the Serena Hotel between Raila’s newly acquired shell, the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), and Nyachae’s Ford People. Coincidentally, the same day, Ngilu, Wamalwa and Kibaki, calling themselves the National Alliance Party of Kenya (NAPK), had decided to hold a massive political rally at Uhuru Park. As Raila was leaving the Serena Hotel, having signed the MoU, he came across the NAPK leadership and throngs of supporters walking towards Uhuru Park. Raila saw the park overflowing with people and his heart missed a beat. He greeted the walking band and decided to join it. He wasn’t going to pass up an opportunity like this. “This is the winning team,” he must have said to himself. Back at the Serena, Nyachae could not have had any idea that things had changed so dramatically in the space of a few minutes. He had made a fatal mistake that others, including this author, would make, again and again, to our individual and collective peril: of trusting Raila Amolo Odinga. Within one hour of signing Nyachae’s MoU Raila, the quintessential opportunist, stood before the crowd and declared “Kibaki Tosha!” (Kibaki is fit for leadership!) MIGUNA MIGUNA
