One day, during the Revolutionary War, a man stepped out of his tent. It was extremely cold, and the wind was blowing. He decided to go for a walk around the camp. He was in a long coat with his collar turned up. The man came across a group of soldiers under the command of a corporal. They were building a tall fortification of logs and the corporal kept barking orders, “Up with it! Push harder! What’s your problem?” They tried with all their might to push the final log in to place on top, but the soldiers couldn’t quite do it. Every time they almost got it there, the last log would come crashing down. The corporal kept harassing and ordering his men to try harder. Once more they attempted, only to have the log fall and roll again. So the man got in place with the soldiers to help, and they pushed with all of their strength, and finally the log fell into place. The man said to the corporal, “Why didn’t you help your men with the heavy lifting?” He said, “Don’t you see? I’m a corporal!” The man replied, “Indeed.” He opened up his coat and revealed his uniform, and said, “I’m the Commander-in Chief. The next time you have a log too heavy for your men to lift, send for me!” The man was George Washington, who later became the first American president. (Elected unanimously as the first President of the United States in 1789.) George Washington was a leader who was a great soldier and servant to those he led. No wonder God used this great servant to establish a new nation. Happy Independence Day America! For, brethren, ye have been called unto liberty; only use not liberty for an occasion to the flesh, but by love serve one another. Gal 5:13 (King James Version)
