One day in the early 2000s I put on a green sharkskin suit, some orange Reeboks and took my old dog Chico for a walk to Alamo Square. There was a movie being filmed there, they had constructed a set of futuristic looking picnic tables or something. As I walked by I looked into the lights to see if there were any famous actors hanging out. I locked eyes with a guy who was right in the middle of the action. He pointed at me, waved and did a thumbs up motion. I looked around to see if there was anyone behind me. There wasnt. He pointed and waved even more to make sure I saw him. I got a little closer and realized that it was Robin Williams. I waved back, with a bit more subtlety, just in case he was actually waving at someone else. My acknowledgement of his wave seemed to satisfy him and he got back to what he was doing. I didnt know why, but all that definitely happened. Robin Williams definitely pointed, waved and gave me thumbs up from a distance. Anyway, just 2 or 3 nights later I was watching Letterman or Conan, I cant remember which. The guest was Robin Williams. He was wearing a green sharkskin suit and orange sneakers. I met him a few times after that and he was always absolutely magical and engaging. Not one ounce of aloofness. I never got to ask him about the suit incident, he was too quick to offer up good conversation about other things. Ill never forget how he looked me directly in the eye with a genuine smile and connection. He was 100% there with me. I remember thinking This man makes people laugh because he loves them. Many artists perform to get love. Robin Williams performed to give love. Nothing sadder than losing a funny man.
