One day, my daughter Vannesa Palomo and I went groceries shopping. She was about 10 years. On our way to HEB she kept asking me to buy her a coloring book. I kept telling her that we could not afford it. I was unemployed at the time. While grocery shopping, I grab a six pack of beer and put it in the cart. She then asked me, how come your buying beer if we dont have any money? I didnt have a response except to put the beer back on the shelve and buying her the coloring book. It impacted so much that shortly there after I quit drinking. Recently we had a situation where as a family we had to have a plan on how to deal with what was happening. Fortunately, the situation solved it self. After it was solved, my daughter and I spoke and were relieved that our situation was taken care of. The point of my story is that as parents we need to have an open communication with our daughters and sons, no matter how old they are. Ever since our daughter and son were born we have made it a point to always do things together, from eating out together, sharing expenses, helping each other, and helping others in need. This is a value that was passed on to us by my wifes parents and my mother. Teach your daughters and sons to be responsible, be persons of integrity, and to always do the right thing. I always tell them that its easier to defend a mistake than to defend a lie. These 3 things will open doors for them no matter where they enter.
