One day when the road from my school was partially flooded after a particularly heavy downpour, I decided to trudge through the water barefooted to avoid soaking my shoes. Unfortunately, I stepped onto a nail that went right through the sole of my foot. Collapsing in agony and crying from the pain, this rough looking young man with long hair, helped me up and pulled the nail out. As I was unable to walk, he piggy-backed me all the way to the govt clinic almost half a kilometer away. There he got me treated by the doctor and then carried me on his back all the way to my home another half km away. I never got his name (it was in 1970) or had the opportunity to thank him. However, his kind deed is unforgotten and I pray to God that he will be blessed for the kind soul he is. The moral is that looks and language do not indicate the humanity of a person but by his/ her deeds toward others. With this in mind, Emmanuels story strikes a poignant note with me. Bless that Bangladeshi. At the end of the day, most of them are just human beings trying to eke out a living in a land far away from their homes.
