One definite difference between the West and India is that we have an isomorphism in terms of the map of scale patterns and nomenclature respectively if those were superimposed. But in India, that schema would be homomorphic, because a scale could lead to one of many ragas - for instance, the identity of a raga might not be an inflexible structure of intervals but what wed call a certain dynamic envelope on a certain point of the melodic continuum.
