One especially disturbing incident took place at an Emergency Room in California. My husband was visibly weak and dehydrated from persistent vomiting and diarrhea. The ambulance arrived and rushed him to the emergency room. I explained the situation and day’s events to the hospital staff. I told them that I was his wife and legal guardian and that he was demented and might need to be restrained. He was frightened, agitated, and just felt rotten. The facility did not have or take the time to properly assess the situation, regardless of my adamant vocal concerns. He did need an IV but the hospital staff would not restrain him. Restraining policies differ from facility to facility. The legalese and semantics of the current laws applied to restraint are very confusing and difficult to interpret.
