One great great mind analyzing what ails our country. The reasons why we have been economically left behind by our Asian neighbors. But, I believe, the be-all of the cultural antecedents that continue to haunt us - was left out in the analysis (although, F Sionil Jose, at the outset, made it clear that he was no authority on anthropological studies and that his essay was a result of his personal observations as a writer,) our being overly religious which, I believe, is the biggest wart of our psyche. The ipa-sa Diyos na lang natin, or bahala na ang Diyos sa kanya/kanila, mentality - contrast the number of people who joined the Million People March with the people who thronged the most recent Black Nazarene procession. That multitude, would have been more than enough reason for the PDAF thieves to resign from their posts with their tails behind their crotches, had it been this fanatical multitude who staged that protest rally. I dont think we can still expect the elites and the oligarchs to change voluntarily. They will do everything they can within their economic powers to protect their greed. Change in their behaviors will have to be effected from the outside, by the masses or by a morally and spiritually upright leader. But then again, we cannot really expect the masses to do that because of their distorted morals and the bahala na ang Diyos sa kanila, mentality. It has to come from a strong-armed leader who will not play footsie nor compromise with the evils of society. That leader must be able to call a spade a spade. No politically correct shit of a languge in his vocabulary. That is the reason why, Mayor Rody Duterte and Sen. Miriam Defensor Santiago are getting popular by the day because they are able to articulate very well in public, the innermost sentiments and frustrations of the common tao, which they cannot say by themselves or even collectively. This virtue of fatalism, of being overly religious to a fault, was epitomized by the late Cory Aquino during her presidency.
