One group is using those cold temperatures to give back to the community. Chicago and Michiana Five for the Homeless collect warm clothes and blankets all year to give out during the winter months. They set a goal of collecting 500 blankets and ended up with over 750 to give to Hope Ministries in South Bend. John Shafer, director of the group, says their goals dont stop at collecting blankets. If we can keep a homeless person warmer and safer thats on the streets this winter,” Shafer said, “then thats what were aiming to do. Hope Ministries says they serve almost 9,000 meals a month. The warm clothes and blankets should start being distributed by Friday.
