One hundred fifty years ago, on April 28, 1864, Capt. Eathan Allen Pinnell and the 8th Missouri Infantry (C.S.) are in hot pursuit of Steele’s Union army: April 28, 1864: Spent the A.M. crossing the Ouachita River on a raft bridge thrown over the river last night. At noon started in pursuit, leaving our train and carrying only our arms, ammunition, and rations. Left in hospital Lt. Ragan, Serg’t Lamar, and Prv’t H. Sheperd, L. Williams, W’m Brown, J. Richardson, and E. S. Pruett. Marched eighteen miles over a barren flat pine country, one swamp and few houses on the road. The way was strewn with Federal clothing, knapsacks, and blankets torn up and thrown away. Our Brig. in advance bivouacked on a gravely point among the brush and ticks–the ground the Federal rear left this A.M. Day warm
