One hundred fifty years ago, on May 8, 1864, Private Henry A. Strong of the 12th Kansas Infantry began the long march to Fort Smith: May 8th, Sunday Marched fifteen miles and camped on a small stream near the Arkansas River. Am quite unwell today. Could not keep up with the command. Got into an ambulance towards night and to camp five miles. If it had not been for this, should staid behind, as I could not have walked. All the men that were not able to march before leaving Little Rock were put on a boat and sent up to Fort Smith by water. If I had known I should have been so unwell, I would have went on the boat, but I thought I would be able to march with the command.
